Bandelier National Monument 02.02.09 : Bandelier's human history extends back for over 10,000 years when nomadic hunter-gatherers followed migrating wildlife across the mesas and canyons. By 1150 CE Ancestral Pueblo people began to build more permanent settlements. Reminders of these past times are still evident in the park as are the strong ties of the modern Pueblo people. By 1550 the Ancestral Pueblo people had moved from their homes here to pueblos along the Rio Grande (Cochiti, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo).

In the mid-1700's Spanish settlers with Spanish land grants made their homes in Frijoles Canyon. In 1880 Jose Montoya of Cochiti Pueblo brought Adolph F. A. Bandelier to Frijoles Canyon. Montoya offered to show Bandelier his people's ancestral homelands.

In 1916 legislation to create Bandelier National Monument was signed by President Woodrow Wilson. In 1925 Evelyn Frey and her husband, George, arrived to take over the Ranch of the 10 Elders that had been built by Judge Abbott in 1907. Between 1934 and 1941 workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) worked from a camp constructed in Frijoles Canyon. Among their accomplishments is the road into Frijoles Canyon, the current visitor center, a new lodge, and miles of trails. For several years during World War II the park was closed to the public and the Bandelier lodge was used to house Manhattan Project scientists and military personnel.

Acoma Pueblo 01.31.09 : Acoma Pueblo (Sky City)
The Pueblo, believed to have been established in the 12th century or even earlier, was chosen in part because of its defensive position against raiders. It is regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Access to the pueblo is difficult as the faces of the mesa are sheer. Before modern times access was gained only by means of a hand-cut staircase carved into the sandstone.

There are several interpretations of origin of the name "Acoma". Some believe that the name Acoma comes from the Keresan words for the People of the White Rock, with aa'ku meaning white rock, and meh meaning people. Others believe that the word aa'ku actually comes from the word haaku meaning to prepare; a description that would accurately reflect the defensive position of the mesa's inhabitants.

Today, fewer than 50 tribal members live year-round in the earthen homes of Sky City. Those living in the community tend the massive San Estévan del Rey Mission, completed in 1640. Both the mission and pueblo have been designated as a Registered National Historical Landmarks. Nearly 3,000 additional tribal members live in the nearby villages of Acomita, McCarty’s and Anzac.

Snow Lake 07_04_2007 : Snow Lake on the 4th of July!! 1300 feet elevation gain in the first 2 3/4 miles then 700 feet down in 1/4 whew!!.

Access

I-90 to exit #52. From the exit, turn north and take the second right onto Alpental Road. Continue for 1.5 miles and park in the large gravel lot to the left. The trailhead is on the right.

Attractions & Considerations

Snow Lake Trail is one of the most frequented trails in the greater Seattle area and can be a very crowded hike. The trail begins at a flat grade traveling through a series of avalanche chutes and groves of large trees. At 2.0 miles there is a spur trail, which goes 0.5 mile to Source Lake. Snow Lake Trail #1013 turns sharply right at this point and switchbacks up the ridge before dropping down to lake level. At the top of the ridge a large rock outcropping offers an overlook of the lake and is a popular destination for day hikers. The main trail stays to the right at the top of the ridge and continues to the far side of the lake, where it junctions with the Rock Creek Trail #1013.1 and the High Lakes Trail #1012.

Notes:

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
Use designated campsites. NO campfires.
The trail is closed to motorized vehicles and bicycles.
Llamas and goats only; contact Ranger Station for current conditions.
Dogs must be on a leash.

I-90 to exit #45. Go north and turn left on Road #9030. Continue on Road #9030 for three-quarters of a mile. At the “Y” stay left (straight) onto Road #9031 (Mason Lake Road). At 3.2 miles the road is blocked. Park here, walk quarter-mile across Mason Creek and continue to walk the old road for 1 mile past the old user built trail. The new trail begins the gradual ascent for 3 long switchbacks. Continue quarter-mile, losing 500’ elevation to the outlet of Mason Creek and on to the lake. Head west beyond Mason Lake to Mount Defiance and Thompson Lake or east to several alpine lakes, including Rainbow and Island Lakes, reached via trail #1009.

Talapus Lake 11/2004 : Access

I-90 to exit #45. At the stop sign turn north. Turn left on Road #9030. Follow Road #9030 for 0.75 mile and turn right at the junction, following Road #9030 uphill to the trailhead at the end of the road.

Attractions & Considerations

This moderate hike is very popular with first time backpackers and families with children. The trail begins on an overgrown logging road through an old clearcut, enters forest shade and switchbacks up a hillside to a marshy area below Talapus Lake. Paths here branch in several directions. The main trail crosses the outlet on a bridge and at 2.0 miles comes to Talapus Lake (a good stopping point). The trail continues 1.25 miles to Olallie Lake. This area offers little privacy or seclusion due to overuse.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.

Snow Lake 07/2004 : Access

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
