05.18.08 : Toby and I attempted to hike to Franklin Falls, we couldn't get to the trailhead due to an over abundance of snow!! I stopped at Ashel Curtis Nature Trail because I was sure I could get there and walk around the loop. NOPE! Still too much snow, I did get some photos of the "creek" which is now a raging river!!

Snow Lake 07_04_2007 : Snow Lake on the 4th of July!! 1300 feet elevation gain in the first 2 3/4 miles then 700 feet down in 1/4 whew!!.

Access

I-90 to exit #52. From the exit, turn north and take the second right onto Alpental Road. Continue for 1.5 miles and park in the large gravel lot to the left. The trailhead is on the right.

Attractions & Considerations

Snow Lake Trail is one of the most frequented trails in the greater Seattle area and can be a very crowded hike. The trail begins at a flat grade traveling through a series of avalanche chutes and groves of large trees. At 2.0 miles there is a spur trail, which goes 0.5 mile to Source Lake. Snow Lake Trail #1013 turns sharply right at this point and switchbacks up the ridge before dropping down to lake level. At the top of the ridge a large rock outcropping offers an overlook of the lake and is a popular destination for day hikers. The main trail stays to the right at the top of the ridge and continues to the far side of the lake, where it junctions with the Rock Creek Trail #1013.1 and the High Lakes Trail #1012.

Notes:

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
Use designated campsites. NO campfires.
The trail is closed to motorized vehicles and bicycles.
Llamas and goats only; contact Ranger Station for current conditions.
Dogs must be on a leash.

Exit #47 from I-90. Turn south at the first stop sign and then turn left on Road #55. Drive 0.25 mile to the large parking lot on the right. The trail begins at the east end of the parking lot, up the gravel road and to the left.

Attractions & Considerations

The Annette Lake Trail climbs steadily and sometimes steeply up the western slope of Silver Peak. The first 0.75 of a mile crosses old clear-cuts, finally entering into old growth on the south side of the Iron Horse Trail. From here, the switchbacks continue up the mountain for two miles and level out in the last mile before the lake. It ends near the lake outlet. Good campsites exist beyond the outlet, on the southwest section of the lake shore.

Notes:

Franklin Falls 06/2005 (Father's Day) : Access

I-90 to exit #47. Turn north, drive across the overpass and turn right at the "T". In 0.25 mile turn left on Denny Creek Road #58. Follow this road 2.5 miles; just beyond the campground turn left on a paved road. In 200 feet, parking is on the left and the trailhead starts on the right.

Attractions & Considerations

The Franklin Falls Trail follows the south fork of the Snoqualmie River. It is an easy walk that rises gradually through old growth forests, with views of the river. The trail ends at the base of Franklin Falls.

A good 2.0 mile loop can be made by turning right 0.25 mile before reaching the falls. A right turn at this junction will take you back to the Wagon Road trailhead. This short connecting trail joins the Wagon Road Trail #1021.

Notes:

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
No camping or fires permitted.
The trail is closed to motorized vehicles.
Bicycles and stock are not allowed.

Mason Lake 09/2004 : Access:
I-90 to exit #45. Go north and turn left on Road #9030. Continue on Road #9030 for three-quarters of a mile. At the “Y” stay left (straight) onto Road #9031 (Mason Lake Road). At 3.2 miles the road is blocked. Park here, walk quarter-mile across Mason Creek and continue to walk the old road for 1 mile past the old user built trail. The new trail begins the gradual ascent for 3 long switchbacks. At 2.25 miles, take a right at the junction for a steep scramble up Bandera Mtn. or continue half-mile (left) to the ridgeline and high point of the Ira Spring Trail crossing into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. Continue quarter-mile, losing 500’ elevation to the outlet of Mason Creek and on to the lake. Head west beyond Mason Lake to Mount Defiance and Thompson Lake or east to several alpine lakes, including Rainbow and Island Lakes, reached via trail #1009.

Attractions & Considerations:
Fantastic wildflowers late spring through summer. On a clear day there are several vantage points with views of Mt. Rainier. Bandera Mountain summit is at 5,240 feet elevation.

Notes:
A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.

Talapus Lake 11/2004 : Access

I-90 to exit #45. At the stop sign turn north. Turn left on Road #9030. Follow Road #9030 for 0.75 mile and turn right at the junction, following Road #9030 uphill to the trailhead at the end of the road.

Attractions & Considerations

This moderate hike is very popular with first time backpackers and families with children. The trail begins on an overgrown logging road through an old clearcut, enters forest shade and switchbacks up a hillside to a marshy area below Talapus Lake. Paths here branch in several directions. The main trail crosses the outlet on a bridge and at 2.0 miles comes to Talapus Lake (a good stopping point). The trail continues 1.25 miles to Olallie Lake. This area offers little privacy or seclusion due to overuse.

Notes:

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
Use designated campsites. NO campfires.
Trail is closed to stock, bicycles and motorized vehicles
